'America is on the move again': Quotes of the week dominated by Biden address to Congress

The past week was dominated by President Joe Biden's first joint address to Congress — and the subsequent fallout, including Sen. Tim Scott's rebuttal and reactions from the likes of former President Donald Trump. It also saw the New York apartment of Trump associate Rudy Giuliani raided. Here are the quotes of the week.

“Our plan worked, but the last administration shut it down.”

“As I stand here tonight, just one day shy of the 100th day of my administration, 100 days since I took the oath of office, lifted my hand off our family Bible, and inherited a nation in crisis: the worst pandemic in a century, the worst economic crisis since the Great Depression, the worst attack on our democracy since the Civil War. Now, after just 100 days, I can report to the nation: America is on the move again. Crisis into opportunity. Setback into strength.”
Biden, opting against delivering the traditional assessment from presidents during a joint address or State of the Union that the country is “strong.” He also raised some eyebrows by saying that the Capitol riot on Jan. 6 was the “worst attack on our democracy since the Civil War.”

“In my discussion with President Xi, I told him that we welcome the competition and that we are not looking for conflict. But I made absolutely clear that I will defend American interests across the board.”

“With regard to Russia, I made very clear to President Putin that while we don’t seek escalation, their actions have consequences. I responded in a direct and proportionate way to Russia’s interference in our elections and cyberattacks on our government and businesses. And they did both of those things, and I did respond.”

“As we gather here tonight, the images of a violent mob assaulting this Capitol, desecrating our democracy, remain vivid in our minds. … The insurrection was an existential crisis — a test of whether our democracy could survive. It did.”

“It just continues. He wants control of your life. … He’s going to control how much meat you can eat. Can you imagine that?”

“It has been an amazing morning with so many good people calling, but the Left has doubled down. … They are not going to attack my policies. They are literally attacking the color of my skin. You cannot step out of your lane according to the liberal-elite Left.”
Sen. Tim Scott, a South Carolina Republican, speaking during a Fox News appearance on Thursday after he gave the Republican response to Biden’s speech the night before

“He is a friend of mine. Certainly, Ron [DeSantis] would be considered [as a 2024 running mate].
“I endorsed Ron, and after I endorsed him, he took off like a rocket ship.
“He's done a great job as governor. They like that. … I'm just saying what I read and you read. They love that ticket.”
Former President Donald Trump floats the idea of a potential dream MAGA ticket for 2024 with Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis as his running mate

“I believe this is the time when we ought to renew our faith in him who placed this miracle of democracy on these wilderness shores. Because I say from my heart, God isn't done with America yet.”
Former Vice President Mike Pence, in his first speech since leaving office, in South Carolina

“The search warrant is on one single failure to file for representing a Ukrainian national or official that I never represented. I never represented a Ukrainian national or official before the United States government. I've declined it several times. I've had contracts in countries like Ukraine. In the contract is a clause that says I will not engage in lobbying or foreign representation. I don't do it because I felt it would be too compromising.”
Rudy Giuliani, speaking to Fox News host Tucker Carlson, after his New York City apartment was raided by the FBI

“This is the first time that we've seen three historical periods of migration at the U.S.-Mexico border happening simultaneously.”
— Immigration policy analyst Cris Ramon
